To the girl who wrestles with anxiety...

To the girl who wrestles with anxiety,

I get it.

That feeling when you wake up from a terrible night’s sleep, sweat soaked through your night shirt, your hair matted down against your forehead, and your mind running a mile a minute…

I get it.

When your best friend asks to go out for the day and you’ve said yes, but automatically regret it because it means you have to actually leave your home and the thought terrifies you…

I get it.

Feeling fine one minute but the next your heart is pounding rapidly against your chest and your hands are shaking against your thighs as you feel like you’re about to throw up your lunch. It’s your second panic attack that week…

I get it.

The overwhelming feeling when someone said something to you three weeks ago, but you can’t stop thinking about it and it’s consumed your every thought… even right now as you read this.

I get it.

I’ve been there.

When you feel like the world is about to end and your depression is so far deep that the thought of living another second makes you anxious, I get that too.

You’re not alone.

I want you to know something - anxiety, depression, mental illness - it’s a powerful thing, but so are you. You are a mighty force to be reckoned with and are capable of overtaking your anxiety. Even when it seems like you have no more fight left in you, you do… because you’re a warrior. A conqueror through Christ.

When you feel run down, pause… inhale… exhale… and call out to the mighty King who has fought battles before you. Our God has moved mountains. He is calling out for you to find refuge in him. He wants to help you in the trenches of your life and He is able. So, ask him to fight with you… for you.

God also works through His people. Find a counsellor…a therapist…It’s okay. They are here to help you, not to judge. They will listen. They will guide. They will give you tools and tricks to handle your anxious thoughts… so let them.

I want you to know something, beautiful sweet girl. . . I am cheering you on. I am praying that you will know that you are never alone. That your anxiety doesn’t define you. That you can say YES to things. That you are able to live a life that is not being held down by anxious thoughts. That you can go about your day without feeling a panic attack. That you can be happy. You can laugh. Smile. Go out with friends. It’s possible.

But most of all, when you are feeling down, remember this: You have purpose. You’ve been hand-made and hand-picked by the Creator of the heavens. You have been given this life – and even though it might feel like it’s a waste, you are not. You have been called to do great things.

You are beautiful. You are powerful. You are strong. You are brave. You will feel better. You are loved.

This too will pass.

And when you fight remember this, sweet girl… “The spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you.” (Romans 8:11)

I believe in you,

Jenn
