How to Get to Know the Holy Spirit

How to Get to Know the Holy Spirit

Let’s start with a question: What’s the first thing you do with your phone when you enter a new place you’re visiting? Maybe you’re at a friend’s house, at the mall or in a restaurant? If you’re like me, you probably connect to the Wi-fi in the building!

And WHY do we need (and love) the free Wi-Fi?  To connect with all our friends, family and everything that matters to us -via your phone- limitlessly!  Without that connection, you might not be able to fully use your phone and social media, right?  So, the smartest thing you can do to have this limitless free Wi-Fi is to CONNECT to it! Then you won’t have to worry about how much of your data is being used, or any messages or notifications you might be missing. You can have a peace about it, and just go about your day. Sweet!

The other thing about connecting the Wi-Fi, is that once you have connected your phone it will automatically recognize the network every time you go back there. So, you don’t have to re-connect manually, or enter a bunch of silly passwords. Once you have connected once, you’re good! You’re all set up and you can rely on it to be there and to work.

Well, in a similar way, God uses His Spirit to interact with us! The Holy Spirit allows you the “connection” - the way to communicate in all kinds ways with the Source. So, it is very important that you recognize and KNOW that you have this FREE, INCREDIBLE access to God - via His Holy Spirit! What’s amazing is that because He is Spirit, you CAN (and as a follower of Jesus, you DO) have Him with you, inside you, connected to you, All. The. Time.

So, my friend, if you would like to get to know the Holy Spirit more, here are some things to get you started!

1. You first must WANT His help

God’s Word says that you should INVITE Him into your life (Luke 11:13).  You can ask God to help you know the Holy Spirit, you can ask that He make the Holy Spirit more real, more present in your life, more tangible. “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ASK HIM!”

2. Look through your BIBLE & get to know the Holy Spirit by His WORKS

Look at the way the Holy Spirit helped Jesus and the disciples in their daily lives.  It was not until Jesus was baptized in the Holy Spirit that He was “sent” to help and heal other people (Matthew 3:16). With the disciples, it was after they got “filled” with the Spirit that they received power to even perform miracles (John 20:22)! You too can ask the Holy Spirit to help you, to guide you and to intervene when you are in trouble. . . especially in those times when you are at a crossroad and you don’t know which way to go. He can show you the way.

Here are some other verses to check out about the Holy Spirit and how He works in our lives: (John 20:22, John 16:7-15, Isaiah 11:2, John 14:26, Galatians 5:22-23, Romans 8:26 )

3. Give the Holy Spirit a try!

You can “connect” by simply asking Him to reveal Himself to you! Maybe you have some homework and you have to give a speech which makes you super nervous. Or maybe you need to defend yourself from trouble and you need the words so badly but you on your own don’t know what you will say. . . That’s the perfect opportunity to ask the Holy Spirit to help you! And you will be amazed at how once you invite the Holy Spirit to help you - He will.

It has been my experience that the Holy Spirit will give you courage, strength, words, wisdom, peace, and even help you remember things! Jesus said in John 14:26, “the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” But we have to invite Him in. So why not give it a try? He’s got only GOOD things to give. But you’ll never know until you step out in faith, take Him at His word, and try something you never thought possible.

4. LOOK for answers to come in multiple & CREATIVE ways!

As you continue to seek the presence of the Holy Spirit, be attentive to the way He can speak to you and answer your prayers in a variety of communication styles.  For me, the most common place I find my answers is when I am reading my morning Devotionals. It really is amazing how it never fails.  I will open my Devotional and it’s like, “Tada!” Just what I was wondering or searching for seems to jump off the page.

But, I have also had answers come to me via sermons, through my friends, when I’m praying silently or worshiping loudly, when I’m out in nature or alone in my room, through pastors, teachers and even strangers. Yup, I said strangers! That is when it is the most amazing to me, because when a complete stranger comes and tells me things that only God knows I was wondering, it literally gives me goosebumps! It’s sooo amazing to know that God is truly listing to you, and moving in your life in all these incredible ways. He really does want to speak to our hearts! It’s our job to listen when He speaks, and to be open and ready for Him when He answers.

Oh, and by the way, you will know it’s really God because it will match what His Word says, it will seem right to your spirit, and it will ALWAYS be words of encouragement and peace that surpasses understanding. If you get what you think is an answer from God but you are anxious, feel shamed, confused or frustrated - it’s NOT from God. His Word tells us very clearly that, “God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).  The Holy Spirit = Peace.

4. Have CONFIDENCE in what He has promised

The Holy Spirit is with you EVERYWHERE you go and He cares about EVERY part of your life. He doesn’t just show up at church, or for the ‘big’ things. He is with you in ALL the details of your life. He is involved in everything and never misses a beat!

Once you have invited the Holy Spirit to help you, your voice will be recognized, and as you “connect” (speak and pray), everyday and ask for help in every area of your life, He will be unconditionally, attentively listing and ready to help you! He is eternal, infinite, all-powerful, ever-loving, and endlessly compassionate! He will aid you in every area of your life. You will have renewed peace, joy and hope as the Holy Spirit lives within you. Not to say that things will be perfect, but you can have the confidence that He is WITH you and working things for your GOOD, renewing your heart and mind. All of His good gifts, known as “The Fruit of the Spirit” (see Galatians 5) will continue to grow. As you get to know Him more, you’ll see Him change you from the inside out. It’s amazing!

Girls, please hear this: You can trust and REST in the promises He has made. We don’t need to be anxious in His presence or feel like we aren’t worthy. He has called us to be close to Him, and He truly WANTS you to know Him. So, try it! The best part is that it’s available to you everywhere and in every circumstance.  His presence in your life is limitless and powerful and truly only good!
